Robey | Main Page Welcome
to my online cv. On 21 December 2005 I received my PhD in Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. My main theoretical interests are Linguistic and Cultural Anthropology; my main ethnographic area is Mesoamerica (more specifically Cobá, Quintana Roo, México). My dissertation research is on notions of self among the rural Maya of that region. I am now seeking publication of a book manuscript derived in large part, and yet shortened and altered substantially, from that dissertation. One of my current projects among the Maya analyzes modern-day local attitudes toward the Classic Maya ruins in Cobá and other archaeological materials. This project is abstracted on the Field Interests page. I am also conducting research into Maya ideas about dreaming. An article on the reception in the village of Cobá of the Mel Gibson film Apocalypto was recently published in the Anthropology News and is available here. I am also pursuing a separate study of the generic aspects of creativity, particularly as it is manifested in practical terms by those working in the UK advertising industry. The first publication arising from that work and supplementary research is a co-authored piece called "Creativity in Advertising, Fiction, and Ethnography" (see Publications for reference information).I shall continue adding new information to this cv as I go. Copies of my published articles and doctoral dissertation are available on request. Likewise, draft versions of works-in-progress are (often) also available (please email me at the address on the Contact Info page). |
